Dan Vogl is a high vibe, indie rock n’ roll artist, from Melbourne, Australia. Dan’s journey hasn’t been easy, and it hasn’t been fast. Rather more it is a slow and steady journey. Day by day, step by step.
Dans love of music started at a very young age. He remembers listening to Paul Kelly, Crowded House and Hunters and Collectors CDs in the back of his dad’s ‘91 Pajero on the way to family camping trips.
It was at the age of 10 when Dan picked up a broken acoustic guitar from the side of the road in a hard rubbish collection. He repaired it with duct tape and went on to teach himself how to play guitar, sing and write songs. This led him to develop his own taste in music. If ever in his presence at home you would always hear bands like Blink 182, Green Day and Red-Hot Chili Peppers blearing out his bedroom speakers. After a few years of learning music and playing guitar, Dan started a band with a couple of school mates. They performed at school fetes, assembly’s and eventually had their first gig at the Swan Hotel in Richmond. Over the following years, Dan played in a variety of bands, including a solo project performing under the moniker ‘EEO’, writing songs and playing gigs with local young musicians.
In 2016 Dan decided to step up wanting to learn more and upgrade his skills so he enrolled in a Diploma of Arts in Music Performance at The Australian College of the Arts. He chose song writing as his main elective. In his second year he was recognised for his talents and was awarded a songwriter’s scholarship to record and release his debut single ‘If I Die’ under his own name. It received airtime on Triple J, a video feature from Speaker TV and was used in the TV series ’600 Bottles of Wine’ that screened on Network 10 and Netflix.
Dan utilised his community at ‘Collarts’ to form a backing band of talented classmates. In 2018 Dan participated in a music mentoring program through ‘The Push’ and received mentoring from Powerfinger’s Darren Middleton. In 2019 Dan worked with producer Joel Quartermain from the band Eskimo Joe, to record his debut EP ‘Gifted In Gold.’ This saw him chart in the Top 10 on the ‘Amrap’ Regional Charts, as well as receiving press attention from Tone Deaf, Music Feeds, Beat and Forté. Later that year Dan travelled to North America and performed many gigs in the Canadian ski town of Whistler. It was during that trip that Dan really got a taste for performing music ‘full-time’. He started to see the potential and demand for his music.
Dan returned to Melbourne as the pandemic reared its ugly head and participated in the Music Victoria’s Artist Consultancy program, where he gained artist mentoring from prolific music manager, Michael Parisi. As there were no venues open to perform live, he used this time creating content for social media and YouTube, honing his audio recording and video editing skills.
In 2021 Dan’s next single ‘Bland Francisco’ saw a change of direction sonically, working with producer Alex Markwell from The Delta Riggs. This was rewarded with a plethora of community radio play and interviews, alongside the addition to MTV Upload programming. Dan went on to release a string of singles with ‘Let Down’, ‘Sky Falls Down’ and ‘Guts and Courage’. This included a wide variety of live performances, supporting the likes of indie rockers British India, folk singer/songwriter Bob Evans and touring with new wavers, Pseudo Echo. In early 2024 Dan released ‘Breathe You In’ and shortly after quitting his full-time job to pursue music not only creatively, but also financially his decision was greatly reaffirmed. In September he won the Grand Final of the ‘Unplugged’ music competition at Two Buoys, Dromana.
Through these small steps, small wins, Dan is taking it day by day in an effort to constantly grow and hopefully carve out a successful career as an artist and musician.
